So, I’m writing this post from my phone — which is something I’ve never done…written posts from my phone. So, as I set out to do that – I went to Google to type in the name of the blog so I could sign in to WordPress and get to posting…and well, not surprisingly, links for the book came up. But, immediately I noticed the link for it on Goodreads and it said there were 2 comments / reviews for the book there. What!? How had I not even known that? I’m on Goodreads all the time!
I clicked to see what they were and they were horrible. I am second-guessing even posting about it because they were so just so mean and I don’t want to bring more attention to it. But, oh well. I am still posting about it. Maybe it will help someone.
Writers always talk about how everyone gets “bad comments” and reviews, etc. It’s true, I knew that. And I am all for expressing your opinion, etc. etc. But, what I don’t like or appreciate is cruelty.
If you didn’t like my book, so what? That’s okay! With everything you have some that like it and some that don’t. But, did you really have to post online that it is “laughable”? No. I don’t think so.
This is what I do if I read a book I am not too fond of. NOTHING.
I go by the “say something nice or don’t say anything at all” rule.
BUT, some people feel compelled to leave reviews. Good or bad. (I do notice that most reviews in general are bad. It’s like people only take the time to say bad things about something, in an effort to vent their own issues and to ward off others. People will take out time to be negative but not to be positive. Which is very sad. Everyone would be happier if more kindness was going around instead of hatred.)
Anyways — before I run too far off on a tangent…if you feel like you have to leave a review, think a little bit about what you’re saying before you type it and hit ‘enter’. There is a real person on the other end reading those harsh words and being hurt by them. If you don’t like something, that’s fine. But, find a way to say it that doesn’t attack the person.
If I felt like I had to write a negative review of a book, I couldn’t imagine being as ruthless as some people are.
At first, I felt bad for myself. I thought, “wow, good thing I didn’t quit my day job,” and “maybe I shouldn’t even be trying to write another book.” But after a little while of self-wallowing I said, “Whoa, whoa, snap out of this! You do not deserve this.” And I don’t.
So, if you’ve ever been in a similar situation, just remember that you don’t deserve that either. Who cares about strangers that have nothing better to do than put you down. Keep your chin up and head high. Like attracts like, and you don’t need to attract that bad kind of like.
